Sunday 12p-6pm

We start the week on Wednesday kicking the doors open with Wood fired pizza and live music at 4pm-9pm,

Followed by an encore Thursday night 4pm-9pm with Traditional Sangria served on Thirsty Thursdays.

Fridays are whole other bunch of fun with Pizza's, Live Music followed by our Movies on the Lawn. We only have a few more left for this season. 12pm-10pm..Come on in for a tasting. Grab a bottle hit one of the many patios

Saturdays are full of tastings and tours, 12pm-10pm and live music in the Courtyard at 7pm

Sundays can be sleepy and your can soak up the sun on the patio from 12pm-6pm while sipping on some wine of course. We also serve local and imported beers.

We are pruning now which is always fun in the wet cold Rain/Snow, Good news is that we seem to be in some kind of Banana Belt. Everyone else is getting snow we are just getting wet. We are having a great time we are enjoying all the sites. The shopping is great there is a store called the Ka Da We it is an amazing six floors of everything you can imagine, think of Macey's but with a grocery store along with a high end wine shop, they have wine tasting and champagne tasting with several pubs along with it's own food court. They have an American dept. Full of everything we see everyday.

We are on day two here in Paris we are staying off the beaten path in the Bastille neighborhood, it's full of scooter shops and local little bars and restaurant a few hotels. We are staying at a three star which means it's clean and has a lift. but it much less expensive here than in the more touristy places here in Paris. Most the people here here are staying on business. We are off to Berlin tomorrow...we are still waiting on a check back home to go in our bank. We are penniless here in Paris but it is Paris.....We hope to hit up some wineries here on our next leg.

This Weeks Artist is John Baker

John Baker is a singer/songwriter from southwest Washington who takes his songs straight out to the audience. He started writing songs in the hills of Indiana, performing in bands through high school and beyond college.

Now he's trimmed his music to the bare basics for performing solo: strong vocals built of melody and stories, backed by fingerstyle acoustic guitar. His unique style is rooted in folk, blended with pop, blues and funk, and lightly seasoned with slide guitar, harmonica, saxophone and foot drums. John's songwriting is inspired by nature and mysteries of the human soul.

A first solo CD is in the works, and will include many of the original songs he performs live.

Summer is NOT over..

Summer is over,,I know. With the colder nights and kids returning to school the days of warm weather are numbered.. We do look like we are going to get a couple days of warm weather. Unfortunately the grapes this year have taken a beating,, Along with everything else. We cut grapes last week in hopes to having a few ripe grapes. The good news though even the warm days are few we can look forward to cozy nights next to our new fireplace while sipping on a big glass of Pinot Noir, or wonderful new Syrah.

We have a lot of weeding and mowing to do plus some vineyard work. It never stops.. The garden project is coming along nicely. Going to plant next week.

We just had our two new Honey bee hives moved in. The kids are excited about having bees and of course honey. No we are not getting in the honey business. Bees are a great way to make sure we get a high percentage bloom rate on our grapes plus our other flowers and plants. Most Vineyards use a chemical version we are trying our hand at bee handling to see if we can let nature do it's work. We are also working hard on getting our greenhouse up we have to clear a spot for it. It seems I never have time...
The next time your up let us show you around if you are not deathly afraid of bees we show you those too.

Sunny Days

We are well in to what we call in the business as "Bud Break" this is the description of the vines buds pushing out to start this years vines, The weather has been a little troublesome if you know what I mean, I believed it snowed and was sunny in the same day last week. Crazy. But we are happy with how the vines are doing. Today and the rest of the week are looking to be quite gorgeous. We are doing some more bottling today. I am itching to put our new garden in but yet there is still some snow up on Silver Star.
Which I don't remember where I heard that but that rule around here. No Planting until its melted. I am looking forward to the new wines that are coming out we are working on Blackberry now this should be a big year for it..Yesterday Coco and I carved out a hour to visit a good friend of mine he owns and operate Bouldercreek Landscape, He is hanging out with new little one playing kinda of a stay at home dad except his happens to be 10 acres of really cool projects. He is putting in some Pinot Noir Vines, He has a gorgeous place he built a great barn and the place is layout and is going to be a wonderful display of what he can do with a shovel and tractor Jon is amazing with creating wonderful landscapes. He has all the cool toys to do so which always makes be slightly jealous. But either way it was nice to visit with him his vineyard going to look great when its done.

Monday Monday

Beside being a cool old song, Mondays are my day off, Now I would most likely not take a day off, But to stay married we take Mondays off. If you are married you will know what I mean. So this day off was not the greatest day off, But we did start it out like it was. We went to Elsewhere which what I call Portland not that Portland is bad but I try to stay local. Actually Portland is quite great in many ways one being the small little trendy places to eat. This morning was no exception we enjoy a wonderful biscuit breakfast from Pine St Biscuit which is on Belmont oddly enough. But no matter where it is located it is wonderful. It is very small though but they have great vintage decor with raw pine slats. Monday morning the place was packed, You walk in there is only about 8 places to sit you quickly make your order off a chalk board menu leave your name. spend the rest of the time bumping into each other while you dance out of the way from the rest of patrons either trying to get a cup of coffee or clear there dishes. But let me tell you it is worth the wait soon your name is shouted out your plate with a steaming breakfast is ready, You quickly grab it up find a place to sit either among the rest of the folks or take it to go. Everyone waiting and eating are very nice. A lot of excuse me's and thank you's. The kids accompany us for this family day. The day turned out so nice I enjoy Mondays but don't tell Heather. We are now off to some good friends and Club Members for a BBQ.. What a day!!!!!

This weekend looks to be fabulous, We should BBQ up on the Patio.

Good Morning

This morning I woke up early did some paper work, Posted some info to Facebook which is always fun. I grab the kids went down to one of my favorite places to eat The Pioneer Street Cafe in Ridgefield. It's a great little place they do a great job on dinners we sell them a little wine. The owner Jessica is great she is really nice and a great chef as well she always is coming up with some fun new stuff for the menu and themed dinners.

This morning I tried there Eggs Benedict which was excellent, You can really tell that she uses farm fresh eggs and homemade bread. The eggs where rich and dark yellow almost amber. It's amazing how this very familiar dish tasted and look so rich in comparison with you normal breakfast outlet. Sailor is on this new kick of biscuits and gravy something I introduced him to which he obviously loving. Coco and him split a half order gotta love that for the bottom line. You could smell the potatoes there where real, not frozen.. Wow imagine that! real potatoes the kids enjoyed there breakfast, They each had a Hot Chocolate with real wipe cream new to them put they like it. They each didn't finish there plates, Nice large portions. If you are looking for a nice place for breakfast, lunch or dinner check out the Pioneer Street Cafe, They are expanding there outdoor patio this summer so it should be a regular weekend stop.

Flap Door

This time of year gives a look at chaos in affect. I call it the flap door affect. What I mean is that we go from spring weather to winter weather in hours or days. This is fun when you are working outside. I know some of you know what I am saying. I enjoy this crazy time of year. The Vineyard is sprouting looking good for this year I am excited about the up coming year. We are looking forward to touring our new garden.

I love the way the vineyard looks when we get it all mowed. It looks so clean and nice.
We have also mowed our field which looks great with the classic mow lines. The East Vineyard is looking good, We are ready to plant in the next month. I am looking forward to releasing our new wines.. I think you guys will like them a lot.

Sundays can be Slow!

Often we open our doors at noon on Sunday and there really aren't too many people here.
Then we ask ourselves, why we are open.? Soon enough three o'clock sneaks up on us and the tasting room begins to fill up. Along with it comes the laughter and clanging of glasses. In time there are plenty of people in our tasting room and we find ourselves staying open past our 6pm closing time. We tend to really enjoy our weekly visitors, they are so stinking fantastic.

Tonight we sat around snacked on some delicious cheeses and crackers while swapping stories that started with "This one time in band camp....". Okay so not really they usually just start with, "This one time we were..." and tends to end with "it was so funny". We really do enjoy our customers and we want to thank them for all their entertaining stories and most importantly all their support. Hope to see you all soon and hear some new tales.

We have been taking advantage of the good weather, We are trying to to get the east vineyard ready to plant this year. So someday we will have a real vineyard. Or least a sizable one. It has been a great start to the growing season. I hope we don't get any hard frosts though with everything blooming so early it is a fear of mine. That our good jump forward will come to a freezing crash. Look forward to some of our 2010 projects I think people will like what we have in store up here. Also The sparkling is coming along.. Nicely we should be up to good production levels in the next week.

Yes that is right we have completed our project we have the bubbly well actually we don't we have a waiting list for bubbly, SW Washington Sparkling Pinot Noir is now out.
We released it over the big weekend and soon realized we underestimate the popularity of it. We soon sold trough the 6 cases we had on hand. We now are taking names and trying to keep up with the production. We are enjoying the craze on our new release.
We are glad people are enjoying it. We are working hard on getting it ahead of the curve

We had a great weekend, Thank you all that came out to support the winery tour. We had Majestic Chocolate out they did a great job with pairing the there exotic chocolates with our red wines. What a weekend we saw lots of great new people along with some of our wonderful patrons, We thank you all who came out. It was a great weekend. We also tried a new approach we had volunteers help out this weekend to take the long work load off of us. It was great to talk to people. I think our helpers enjoyed themselves. What a show!

So if you didn't make it to the Live Music this weekend you really missed out. We weren't really sure what to expect from our performer on Saturday. A couple of weeks ago we had Raeann Phillips play at the winery and we had not yet booked someone for the 16th. It's hard to find someone to play when you only have 2 weeks notice. So we spoke with Raeann about the dilema hoping she knew of someone that might be available. She wasn't sure but knew of a couple of people she could ask. She called me back and said that she had a friend that was available to play on that date. She gave me his number and I gave him a call. He didn't answer so I left a message on his voice mail verifying that what Raeann had asked him. He called me back and got my voice mail. He left a message stating that he could play for us on the 16th. So once again I called him back to say that we would love to have him come out but I need to know what he charged for a 2 hour set. Once again voice mail. We never were able to talk to each other prior to the show. That left us a little nervous. What if he never showed up? What if he was terrible? Well let me tell you he was the opposite, he was fantastic. A truly great musician. He played for 2 1/2 hours straight, no breaks. There was not a person in the place that wasn't engaged in what he was singing. If you want to check him out I have included a link to his site. We are opening our doors and walls to local artist Paul Harris Paul is a self-taught artist specializing in drawing, ink, and portraits. He illustrates for 1859 magazine, a regional Oregon magazine. He taught art for ten years. Paul is currently exploring acrylics and this new series focuses on Prohibition. His other series focused on the Great Basin, covering places like Bodie, California, and other desert landscapes, animals, and people. He lives in the high desert of Central Oregon with his wife and four daughters.

Winter and Wine

We have finished our pruning we are now looking to expand and finish the East Vineyard. A project that I have wanted to finish for a year now. The time seems to speed up. We have enjoyed this last year with all the fun events we have had and the new friends we have made. We look forward to seeing you all throughout the year.

Could the food get any better?

The day of a dinner can be a little stressful. I wake up thinking about all the tasks I have to complete prior to 7PM. It usually isn't as bad as my mind makes it out to be. Rarely do we have a problem, it almost always flows seamlessly. Not to say we don't have mix ups now and again, 'cause we do. We are just able to fix them with ease.

Last night was no exception, we had a small mix up on the amount of people in a group, but luckily we had them at a table big enough to fit the extras that we missed. In 1 minute flat we had extra chairs brought in, wiped the water off from being outside and had flatware sitting in front of them. A small moment of freak out usually is fixed by remaining calm and addressing the situation.

Other than that one incident, everything was fantastico. We had the lights dimmed and some music playing to enhance the atmosphere. We had 2 servers and Jeremy and I serving water and wine. Everyone had a great time and the food was delicious. I have never seen salad plates come back so clean. It's rare to have so many people finish there salads and last night was a record setter. I was told it was the vanilla that did the trick. Myself, I have never had green beans I have enjoyed more, the flavor was astounding. The chicken was perfectly tender and the chutney added the perfect amount of sweet seasoning. I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the potatoes but I would be lying. I did not get the pleasure of trying them. They looked quite yummy and from the feedback I got from everyone they indeed were yummy. I unfortunately am doing my best to cut back on carbs. I was mostly successful last night except for a couple of tortellini that managed to find there way into my mouth (not totally sure how that happened).

All in all we are extremely pleased with Sweet Pea Catering. Friendly staff, great food, what more could you ask for.

Pruning

With the freezing temperatures coming the vines are hardening up enough for us to prune
which is a great we can get an earlier start on pruning this year. We are expanding our estate vineyard. Plus looking at planting some new site perhaps. Also we have some big changes coming up for the Rusty Grape early next year. Should be very exciting to see what we have in store.

We are going to be in the NW Wine Festival, But we entered there wine competition we entered our 07 Pinot Noir and our 06 Sangiovese both received awards the Sangiovesse won a silver and Pinot Noir received a bronze not bad for a little winery up on the hill

Good Morning, We had our first frost up at the vineyard today.. Which is good we are done picking here at the Tasting room. But it is better news for our Daybreak site where we left some grapes on the vines holding out for the first frost. This week is looking good for dry cold weather. The leaves are starting to turn over there everything is coming together nicely for our Ice Wine. I hope you all enjoy it when we get it done.

On Monday we harvested the Pinot Noir at Glen's Daybreak Vineyard it was a long day of picking and as soon as we were done with harvesting we had to go strait home and start crushing. The fruit was great and the smell as we were crushing was fantastic.

There is still more fruit hanging there that we hope to pick in the next couple of days. With the weather as warm as it has been it should really help get the sugar up. Let's all hope it doesn't get too cold in the next couple of days.

We just are finishing up with the "Crush" the term thrown about for well crushing grapes.
With the late nights and the Chinese take out I missed the crush season. We are waiting on some grapes over at the Daybreak vineyard. Dangerous I know. But we do not have much choice with the weather. We hoping we get some sun after this weekends rain. Keep your figures crossed,

Late Harvest

With the coming of the Fall we are now fighting the rain and cool temps for the harvest of the Pinot Noir at our two locations. I have heard some of the Willamette Valley has picked already hard to say if it was the right decisions each brick of vineyard is different. For us the sugar was right where we needed but we wanted the acid to drop a bit before picking. We will see if our decision was right or wrong. The joys of farming. Oh by the way we just had our Stompfest 09 what a great time.

I know it's been quite along time since I posted here but I 've been really busy. We've had the open air market, The wine and Shine, 4 weddings, a fundraiser, multiple private parties and live music just about every weekend. But the season isn't over quite yet, we still have some more event planning to do. There's the Stompfest, movies on the lawn and some more live music still to come. Like Enation on Sept. 4th. The Daybreak Vineyard

So it's been awhile since my last post, I've been really busy with vineyard work and trying to plan this summer's events. Yesterday, however, we were able to take a trip over to Glen's vineyard in Daybreak (we're going to be getting grape from him this year) and we were super excited by what we saw. The vineyard is immaculate and the vines are growing great. We will now be able to make a white blend with the varitals he grows there (Pinot Blanc, Reisling, Gewertztraminer, and more). He also has a lot of Pinot which is great, we could use some more Pinot around here. Not exactly sure what all he has growing there but we are stoked to be getting more grapes from this great growing region we live in.

Memorial Weekend and what's on the horizon.

As most of you well know, Memorial Weekend is the kickoff to the wine tasting season. And boy did we have one heck of a kickoff. It was an exhausting 4 day weekend with wine tasting galore and little live music (which was delightful). We also ventured our advertising into the Portland scene and from what we can tell it worked. We had many groups who made their way across the bridge to find out what Southwest Washington had to offer. Most were excited by what they experienced but there will always be a few of the "it's not Willamette Valley" crowd. Just give us a couple of years and they won't be able to tell the difference. As for now we keep forging on toward developing our own little wine region. Speaking of our wine region, we now have an organization that is solely dedicated to promoting us here in Southwest Washington. The Southwest Washington Wineries Association will be launching their web site in the next couple of weeks and we are thoroughly excited for it. As is stands now, anyone searching for wineries in Southwest Washington has a hard time finding them if they don't know the names. When the S.W.W.A site is up and running people can simple search for Clark County wineries for example and their site will show up. From their site there will be links to all the wineries in this area, including us. Keep your eye out for them, they'll be doing big things.

Week 3

After a couple months of the remodel sitting stagnate, we have put our nose to the grindstone and are attempting to get it done before the Memorial Tour. We have a great faux painter attempting to match the faux painting we had done originally. Her name is Kathy and she her company is called Wall Candy. She has done a wonderful job and I can't wait to see the finished product. This has been the most stressful part of the remodel. I knew it would be difficult to match the existing wall, especially since we have new person doing it. But all seems to be going well.

Tuesday we began the tiling process by laying all the tiles out and doing any cutting necessary. This was quite a difficult process, the barn is so old, nothing seems to line up. We did the best we could with our limited knowledge and skills of tiling. We ended up doing alot of cutting, probably more than usual, but like I said before, nothing in that barn is square. Yesterday we mixed the thin set and attached the tiles to the floor piece by piece making sure not to misplace any tiles. We managed to get them all set pretty early so we drove down to the Tile Outlet and placed an order for our threshold pieces (they are being made out of left over pieces of granite).

Today we semi-finished the process by grouting the tiles we were able to place (some we couldn't place because we need to get the threshold first).

There are still a few more things that need to be done and things I want to do. I am working on a chalkboard to put right next to the door as you enter to act as a guest book. People would be able to sign thier names, date and where they are from as they are entering or leaving. I also have some more work to do above the entry way from the foyer to the tasting room. I'm not exactly sure what I'm gonna do there but I'm thinking cork, lots of cork. I guess with all the work I have ahead of me I should stop blogging and start working........

Oh how they grow!

It's been just over a week since I last posted a picture of the vines and they have sprung up quite nicely. It's good to see all of our grape children growing so well. Before we know it they will be needing a trim. We are currently making our way down each row, pulling off the suckers from each vine. Something I keep trying to convince the kids is fun, but they won't buy it. With all the rapid growth in the yard and field, it seems I am the only one with the time to do. Jeremy is constantly on the tractor trimming the grass.

On another note, totally off the subject. Something recently got me thinking about copy cats. Why is it impossible for people to come up with their own ideas? I know that imitation is supposed to be flattering but I just don't like it, I never have. Every time I turn around I find someone doing what has already been done. People, get a clue! If you have to copy, you don't have what it takes.

Spring is in the Air!

The weather has been so beautiful these last couple of days. We have been taking advantage of the dry weather and have been working on all the outside tasks that needed to be tended to. We went to Chapmans Nursery on Monday and bought some plants to start filling our hanging baskets. Then I hopped on the mower and attempted to tame the forrest that is the back yard. Jeremy had been working diligently in the vineyard mowing, weeding and tilling around the vines. It's so amazing every year to see our little vines begin to bud out. There is still so much to do, we have to start planning our vegetalble garden or we won't be ready in time. We have already started some seeds in small containers so they will be plants by the time we get it all ready. Now we just have to keep thinking dry.

Sangria Sunday on the Patio

What a beautiful weekend we have had and what a great time at the Rusty Grape this weekend. We started out on Friday with a large group of winery friends that lasted late into the evening. As the night grew on, so did the friends. It's so funny to me to see friendships evolve at our little place. They start off as strangers meeting while drinking a glass of wine and as the time passes they learn more and more about each other. Before you know it they are making plans to meet back at the winery on a following date. Sometimes they show up, other times they don't. But I digress.

Saturday we had live music with Dos Sorella and let me tell you, those girls can sing. I haven't heard the two of them sing together but I can imagine it's fantastic. We are making plans to have them back with the band that they play with this summer out on the stage.

Sunday we served Sangria on the patio, something we plan to continue throughout the summer. We are calling it "Sangria Sunday". And those friends I was talking about earlier, they actually all showed up. Some were a little big late, but they showed up and that's all that really matters.

The OLCC and their regulations

So most of you know that we were planning on having a booth at the Astoria Crab, Seafood and wine Festival but what you don't know is all the hoops we've been jumping through for the OLCC to attend.

So for the last 6 weeks we have been acting like a cute little circus dog, jumping through each and every hoop thrown at us by the Oregon Liquor Control Comission, with no avail. Each time we thought we had it all figured out there was a something new that they had not thought of or one little detail they had failed to mention to us. To start it all off, we were told that Oregon would never allow a Washington winery to go into Oregon and retail their wine, unless they sold the it to a non-profit first and the non-profit would attend the festival, selling the wine. The exception to this was that the representative from the winery could not attend. Then through some stroke of genius they found out that the represenatives could attend and could also sell merchandise from the winery. That didn't last very long, once we sent in the application for the Temporary Sales License for the non-profit, they let us in on a very important fact.
"If I didn't mention this before I do apologize, but the non-profit must be an Oregon one." Well this was some pertinant information, that would have come in handy prior to 2 and half weeks before the event. This still didn't stop us, we moved on and up the chain calling the main office to see what could be done. From them we learned that, if we sold the wine to an Oregon distributor and then the non-profit purchsed the wine from the distributor this would be okay. We got on the horn right away searching for a distributor small enough to do this very big favor for us. We found one, a very nice man willing to do it for us. So we inturn called back the branch office to let them know we had found a way to do. She insisted it was still not possible, there was no way she could give a TSL to a Washington non-profit. She called the main office and found out that they could allow a variance to the Washington non-profit with many exceptions. For one we could not sell merchandise, hand out flyers or pretty much say anything about the winery. Number 2, representatives could not be present at the festival what so ever. Number 3, every person at the booth for the non-profit would have to be a OLCC certified server (not required for and Oregon non-profit, they only need on person to be certified). That is were we let go. We had no fight left in us, after all what was the point of being there, no one would really know anyhow.

Wine Label Specs

Good Morning,

Why is it that people want to know that there is 0g of fat in there wine posted on the label.

It seems there as been a great push for label reformation. I don't really understand to whole idea that we need the a Info box on side of wine labels. Seem kinda silly when you really think about it.

Either way someone who doesn't operate a winery will make the decision some person who buys wine at Trader Joe's(by the way I think Trader Joe's is great it more of a reference to the type of person) because they don't want to pay more that $10 for a bottle of wine will look at there new label for about 3 seconds then pour a glass of wine sit down and think how wonderful this glass is now that it states it has 0g of fat.
